Cataracts

Cataracts are white, opaque blemishes on the normally transparent lens of the eye that can go on to cause a gradual loss of vision. They occur as a result of damage to the protein structure of the lens. The majority of people over sixty years of age display some degree of cataract formation.

The condition has many different causes, the most common being diabetes, old age, glaucoma, smoking, genetics, trauma and certain types of medication. Several clinical studies have demonstrated that vitamin C supplementation can halt cataract progression and, in some cases, significantly improve vision. Carotenoid-like compounds, bilberry extract and vitamin E also help to stop progression of cataract formation by rising antioxidant levels.

You should avoid fried foods, rancid foods, and other sources of free radicals. You should also improve your diet with increased consumption of legumes (high in sulphur-containing amino acids), yellow-orange vegetables (high in carotenes), and fresh fruits and vegetables (high in vitamin E and C).

Nina's Health Protocol:

  • While diet cannot cure cataracts or reverse their progression, certain dietary choices may support eye health and potentially reduce the risk or slow the development of cataracts.
  • Include foods rich in antioxidants to help combat oxidative stress and protect the eyes from damage.
  • Vitamin C is an antioxidant that may play a role in reducing the risk of cataracts.
  • Omega-3 fatty acids have been associated with eye health. Include sources like fatty fish.
  • Maintaining a healthy weight can help reduce the risk of certain eye conditions, including cataracts.
  • While diet is important, regular eye exams and professional eye care are essential for detecting and managing eye conditions such as cataracts. Consult with an eye care professional for appropriate screenings and advice.
