Acne

Acne is the most common of all skin problems. There are three main forms: acne vulgaris, acne conglobata, and acne rosacea. Acne vulgaris affects the hair follicles and oil glands of the skin. It mainly appears as blackheads, whiteheads, and redness. Acne conglobata is more severe form with cyst formation and scarring. Acne rosacea is chronic acne with facial flushing. Acne is most common in males during puberty and is due to hormonal changes. The key dietary recommendations would be to avoid sugar, trans-fatty acids, milk, and fried foods.

Nutritional supplements like chromium, vitamin A, vitamin E, selenium and zinc have been all been shown to improve the condition in its various forms.

Nina's Health Protocol:

I always use a probiotic as part of the treatment protocol for acne as clinical studies show that probiotics help to alleviate symptoms of lactose intolerance and food and skin allergies by helping to balance gut bacteria and reduce skin inflammation.

Foods: spinach, wild garlic, mangetout, asparagus, baby lettuce, hazelnuts, wild salmon, plain home made yogurt, turmeric and coriander

  • Eat a balanced diet include fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats in your meals.
  • Reduce refined carbohydrates and sugar.
  • Increase omega-3 fatty acids: Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit the skin.
  • Consume antioxidant-rich foods, include foods like berries, tomatoes, spinach, kale, broccoli, green tea, and dark chocolate, which are rich in antioxidants.
  • Stay hydrated, limit dairy consumption, avoid processed and fried foods.
  • Be cautious with food sensitivities.
