Vitiligo

Vitiligo is a long-term skin disorder in which pale, white patches develop on the skin. It usually occurs on areas of the skin that are more exposed to sun; the face, neck and hands for example. The condition is due to a loss of colour pigment – melanin – from the skin area. This is caused by the destruction of melanocytes, the cells that produce the melanin pigment, which darken the skin.

Re-pigmentation is of prime importance for this relatively uncommon disorder. Treatment has improved in the last few years and in some cases the pigment can be restored. Nutritional supplements such as folic acid, vitamin B12 and vitamin C are included as supportive treatments.
