Alzheimer’s Disease - Memory and Nutrition

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia there is, affecting almost 500,000 people in the UK alone. The symptoms include loss of memory, mood changes and problems with communication and reasoning. The main cause of this condition is the death of brain cells, mainly due to protein plaques in certain parts of brain. Patients with Alzheimer’s disease also lack some of the chemicals that play an important role in messaging within brain. Regarding the cause of this disease, there is no one thing responsible. Rather it is the result of a combination of factors including age, environmental influences, lifestyle, genetic inheritance and general health.

The best evidence of disease prevention involves the antioxidant supplements vitamin C and E. Vitamin E is a potent chain-breaking antioxidant that restores within cell membranes, neutralising free radicals as they are generated during metabolic processes in the brain. Vitamin E also works as an anti-inflammatory. Other natural remedies to consider for an Alzheimer’s patient are Vitamin D and Turmeric. With Alzheimer’s, there is a defect in the clearing of amyloid-beta proteins in the brain by the innate immune system, and both vitamin D and curcumin, the pigment that is responsible for the yellow colour of turmeric, appear to be more effective in this process. Curcumin helps prevent the spreading of protein plaques in the brain, while vitamin D helps stimulate the immune system to clear the protein out of the brain. These all-natural supplements can be a very good additive treatment for the condition.

Foods I recommend:

Blackcurrants contain anthocyanadins, which protects against free radical damage to the brain. Coconut and its oil; the brain can use the MCTs (Medium-Chain Triglycerides) from the oil for regeneration. Rhubarb contains vitamin K, which protects the brain from damage. And finally, turmeric root, as explained above.
