What is Matcha Tea?

Matcha tea is a type of powdered green tea that originates from Japan. It is made from shade-grown tea leaves known as tencha, which are specially cultivated to increase chlorophyll content, giving the leaves a vibrant green colour.

Making Matcha Tea

Several weeks before harvest, tea plants are covered to reduce direct sunlight. This process boosts the production of chlorophyll and amino acids, particularly L-theanine, resulting in a rich green colour and a unique flavour profile.

Only the finest tea buds are handpicked. The stems and veins are removed, and the leaves are then steamed to prevent oxidation, which preserves the green colour and fresh flavour.

The leaves are dried and then slowly ground into a fine powder using granite stone mills. This powder is matcha.

Matcha is prepared by whisking the powder with hot water using a bamboo whisk, resulting in a frothy, vibrant green tea. Unlike traditional teas, where leaves are steeped and discarded, matcha involves consuming the whole leaf, which provides more nutrients and antioxidants.

Matcha is rich in antioxidants, particularly catechins like EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), which have been linked to various health benefits, including improved metabolism, enhanced mood and concentration, and potential cancer-fighting properties.

Does matcha tea have caffeine?

Yes, matcha tea contains caffeine. On average, one cup of matcha tea (about 1 gram of matcha powder) contains approximately 30-70 milligrams of caffeine. This amount can vary based on the quality and preparation of the matcha.
