If more vitamin C is taken than is required, the excess vitamin C remains in the large intestine and is therefore not absorbed. Vitamin C extracts water here and might cause (osmotic) diarrhoea (achieving 'bowel tolerance'). This phenomenon disappears when the dose is lowered.
